At Table: Cherry Republic Jam

I've been thinking lately of those terrible t-shirts often inflicted on small children not yet in charge of their wardrobes, which say things like: "My grandparents went to Cape May, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt!"

No joke, kid.

This is hardly that, though. This is, really, exactly the opposite of that. My husband went to freezing-cold Detroit and somehow I was rewarded with absolutely delicious Northern Michigan cherry jam. (As evidence of said deliciousness, I invite you to notice how embarrassingly low the jam level is currently riding.)

It turns out Michigan has the largest cherry-growing area in the world, according to Cherry Republic, which makes all sorts of cherry delicacies — dried cherries, chocolate-covered cherries, cherry wine, and even cherry hot cocoa.

A lovely customer service woman named Phyllis told me that CR buys cherries from farms across five counties. So, is that dozens of farms? I hazarded. "Oh gosh, I couldn't say — we buy from really so many farms..." she answered.

The 20-year-old Cherry Republic also buys from several organic farmers, Phyllis confirmed, and offers a number of organic products, including cherry salsa, jam, and preserves.

I, for one, am already looking forward to next year's Auto Show. There's no going back to the t-shirts now...

Transplanted Cherry Republican missing home said...

I am a native to the Cherry Republic, which is to say the greater Traverse City area, but has unfortunately been transplanted to southwest Michigan. My fridge and pantry is fully stocked with items from this absolutely wonderful company. My most favorite items are the Cherry Mustard (the best on leftover turkey sandwiches), Hot Cherry Salsa, Cherry BBQ Sauce, Turtles, Abbondanza Wine, Southern Cherry Rub, I could go on forever! They have 3 stores in Northern Michigan, but the main store in Glen Arbor, Michigan is a destination in itself. While no one really needs an excuse to visit this gorgeous village in the midst of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, the Cherry Republic store is a damn good one. Free samples galore (although this is in all their stores), tasting room for all their beverages, a wonderful cafe, and Fridays nights in the summer months finds the best rib dinner money can buy.

Not only does this company create the very best in cherry products, they don't forget their roots and what their business depends on. They are very active in land conservation and the preservation of the "Up North" quality of life. As if their products weren't enough, their commitments to social responsibility brings my repeat business. There are many companies that produce cherry products for visitors and locals alike, but in all aspects, Cherry Republic is head and shoulders above the rest.

We are currently in sunny, if not so warm, Florida, but we live in Glen Arbor 6-7 months of the year. You are making me drool for my cherry products - are currently awaiting the latest monthly shipment of Boomchunkas (xmas present from eldest son who now lives in Traverse City). Mmmmmmmmmm.

I now live in Indianapolis, but grew up in Northern Michigan. Nothing reminds me more of home (except getting up there) than Cherry Republic products. My husband and I swear that their Cherry Salsa is the best there is. I try to make sure that I never run out. Their customer service is wonderful, and it never takes very long to get an order delivered. Try the jams and cherry butters also. They truly tast fresh.

Cherry salsa, cherry mustard, cherry BBQ sauce — these would never have been my first picks from the Cherry Republic store. So glad to know what I would have been missing out on! I'm going to stock my pantry asap — thanks for the great advice, everyone!
